ABOUT PURPOSE BUILT COMMUNITIES
Purpose Built Communities is the national leader in holistic neighborhood revitalization, creating pathways to prosperity in cities across America.
We believe neighborhoods shape us as individuals and a society, and that when they thrive, we all thrive. Our work is focused on strengthening neighborhoods in cities around the country where unjust policies and practices have created hurdles for Black people and other people of color.
As a philanthropically funded nonprofit organization, we form long-term partnerships with local organizations fully invested in the hard work of transformation in their neighborhoods. Through expert pro-bono services and support we help these organizations—our Network Members—center the voices of residents and advance their strategy through our proven model.
Purpose Built Communities’ approach to revitalization focuses on four foundational elements: high-quality, mixed-income housing; excellent schools that focus on student success in the classroom and in life; inclusive spaces that nurture residents’ physical and mental health and foster a sense of belonging; and a thriving commercial core that keeps the neighborhood economically vibrant.
We currently support more than 25 Network Members with services including one-on-one consulting, a robust Community of Practice where they can learn from and with their peers, racial equity programming, policy support, fundraising, and more.
In addition, we work with other strategic partners and national organizations who share similar goals to build out a field that will accelerate all of our efforts by identifying best practices, gaining resources, and attracting brilliant talent to join our cause.
Together as a network, we are leading a movement to strengthen neighborhoods while honoring heritage. Purpose Built Communities will be seen across the nation as vibrant places where legacy residents and new neighbors meet at the local coffee shop. Where children from all socioeconomic levels live on the same block, and ride their bikes to school together. Where good health is more broadly experienced, and prosperity is commonplace. And where everyone, regardless of income or race, gets to participate in the American dream.
Purpose Built Communities' Core Values:
- Possibility: Our purpose is proving the possible, not settling for the probable.
- Impact: We take action and build bridges to create lasting impact.
- Community: We cultivate connected, mutually contributing communities.
- Equity: We ground our work in the foundational beliefs that race and place matter.
